The Amid Motorcycle show is the biggest Motorcycle Show in South Africa. We did several virtual tours of the show since as early as 2011.
Virtual Reality Events: Awesome reactions of people watching VR for the first time
This was taken in 2013 when virtual reality was not yet easily accessible. What makes this video very special is that I shot a Virtual Tour in 2011 of the Motorcycle show, and people watched in 2013 while at the same Motorcycle show only 2 years later. People got really confused thinking they are watching through the video at the 2013 show. After checking inside the glasses, and then outside again they realized that it was not the same event but the 2012 Motorcycle Show.
The AMID Motorcycle Show, known as the largest motorcycle exhibition in South Africa, has consistently served as a spectacular showcase of cutting-edge technology and thrilling two-wheeled machines. In its pursuit of offering unique and immersive experiences, Virtual Reality South Africa has been a pioneer in capturing these dynamic events through virtual reality. Since 2011, we have conducted several virtual tours, enhancing the way attendees interact with and remember these exhibitions.
One of our most memorable projects was presented during the 2013 AMID Motorcycle Show. That year, we showcased a virtual tour of the 2011 event, offering attendees a rare opportunity to step back in time. The technology was still quite novel, and virtual reality was not as accessible or widely recognized as it is today. This made the experience even more fascinating and bewildering for first-time VR users.
The reactions captured in our special video highlight the awe and surprise of the attendees. As they donned the VR headsets, many believed they were viewing live footage of the 2013 show. The realism of the virtual environment was so convincing that it took several moments of looking in and out of the glasses for many to realize that they were actually experiencing the show from two years prior. This moment of realization was not just amusing—it underscored the power and potential of virtual reality to blur the lines between different temporal experiences.
This experience demonstrated not only the capacity of VR to transport users across time but also its potential to reshape perceptions and enhance understanding of events. For exhibitors, it extended the value of their displays beyond the physical timeframe of the show, creating a lasting impression that attendees could revisit and reflect upon years later.
At Virtual Reality South Africa, we continue to explore the intersection of technology and human experience, aiming to deliver not just content, but an entirely new perspective on how we view events and history. Our work at the AMID Motorcycle Show is just one example of how VR can be used to preserve and relive the past in a profoundly engaging way. As we look to the future, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what virtual reality can achieve, ensuring that every experience is as transformative as it is unforgettable.
